Psyllium is an agricultural crop grown mainly in India. The most
important psyllium product is the Psyllium Husk. Psyllium Husk or
hull is processed from the outer coat of the seed of a plant known
as plantago ovata. The seed is more commonly known as Isabgol or
Isabghula in India.
Psyllium Husk is pure dietary fiber, composed mostly of hemicelluloses.
They act as a sponge in the intestinal tract, swelling as they absorb
water and waste material in the bowels. Husk and Powder are used
in the treatment of constipation. It has been claimed that seed
mucilage is used in cosmetics and as a stabilizer in ice-cream manufacture.
Psyllium can either be used alone or in combination with other laxatives.
Psyllium Husk are not habit forming and can be taken every day.
Psyllium Consumption promotes lower cholesterol levels as part of
balanced program of diet and exercise.
